Doris Day was one of the biggest stars of the 1950s and 60s, so it seems only fitting that she had a home worthy of her stature. After the star's death last year at age 97, there was some question as to what would happen to her stunning Carmel Valley abode. Now, for the first time, it is for sale, at a cool $7.4 million. The secluded 8.62 acre property and home includes six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, some of which are in the compound's two gatehouse apartments or separate guest house cottage. The property includes its own oak trees, gardens, and views of the Santa Lucia mountains. Best of all, you can pretend be a celebrity by sauntering down the home's famous spiral staircase, which was featured in Day’s sitcom “The Doris Day Show.”

Given that it's a celebrity home, Day's compound is not without its special quirks. An animal lover, Day made sure the home was just as luxurious for her furry friends. There’s a 100-square foot enclosed “cattery,” where the star's cats lived and a large dog-care area, complete with its own kitchen, and numerous paths for dog-walking. Fittingly, all proceeds from the home's sale will go to the animal charity Day founded in 1978, the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

The listing is held by Doug and Lisa Steiny of Sotheby’s International Realty, and can be found here. Keep reading for an inside look at the famed compound.
